DESCRIPTION
Mountain tea is an endemic herb that can be found in the Mediterranean area and especially in many Balkan regions, and which is thought to confer beneficial properties mainly due to its biologically active compounds.
-It has been traditionally used adjunctively to relieve symptoms of many diseases, such as bronchitis, common cold, inflammation, and gastrointestinal and urogenital disorders. Moreover, few studies showed the presence of minerals in mountain tea, such as K, Ca, Mg, Na.
-Mountain tea plant polyphenols are considered to be responsible for its anti-oxidative effect, due to the fact that polyphenols protect the human body from the action of free radicals and, by extension, provide protection against the occurrence of oxidative damage.
-Furthermore, the high total phenolic content of mountain tea extract might be responsible for both its anti-inflammatory action and gastroprotective activities.
-Another property of mountain tea is its anti-microbial action, mainly against bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus.
-Mountain tea has the potential to act as an anxiolytic, reducing stress, and enhancing memory and concentration.
-Mountain tea extract can act as a reuptake inhibitor of monoamine – serotonin, noradrenaline, and dopamine – improving mood and mental health.
-Its high phenolic content is responsible for its anxiolytic action. Phenolic acids and flavones, mainly apigenin, exert a strong anti-oxidant effect, reducing symptoms of emotional stress.
-Mountain tea phenolic compounds are also considered to be beneficial, as it is believed that they can reduce the rate of degeneration of brain neurons. As a result, mountain tea helps fight the symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.
-Last but not least, the main phenolic acids found in mountain tea are ferulic and chlorogenic acids, which have the ability to interact with nitric oxide, a vasodilatory mediator, resulting in changes of peripheral blood flow. For this reason, these phenolic acids, and especially chlorogenic acid, give to mountain tea the advantage of contributing to the reduction of blood pressure with positive effects against hypertension, but also to the improvement of cognitive function.
